Does anyone know of a company that provides high speed access to homes by way of sattelite? If so, please post the url. I know the technology is there, I'm just not sure if it's affordable yet.
We would like to get DSL or something, but we live too far out in the sticks...no one provides DSL out our way. The 56k modem idea is getting old to me

Swampy,
DirectTv does offer internet access through satellite--not sure that's what you mean.
I know it's kinda expensive, but I don't know what type of receiver you will need.
There's info at their website, http://www.directv.com

Thanks Rumor! ..... but......
All I could find on that site was their regular DSL service which I cannot get.
I did find a website for sattelite service though...
If anyone's interested, here's the url.

Hey Swampy!!!
Check this.
DirecTV internet solution is called DirecDuo, it's a two internet access satellite setup.
The other choice is Starband http://www.starband.com
Starband is also a 2-way satellite internet access solution. Starband is availible through The Dish Network (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/promotions/starband/index.shtml), Radio Shack and I think they also deal direct.
I post more info on starband and satellite access when I have more free time later today.

Wow, thanks Chad...that Starband really looks like the stuff! I am already on Dish Network and am pleased with their service, so that would be even better!
...but DANG that thing is expensive!! I'll not be looking into buying until the free AOL runs out, so maybe I can spend next year's tax refund on something fun instead of bills
...and by that time, the price will have probably dropped too :)
That thing looks great.

This band of sat. has several problems. One is rain and snow fade. So if you live where it rains a lot or snows a lot, it may not be a good choice (unless you go the big bucks for a much bigger dish - folks in Alaska use it, but instead of little pizza boxes, they use 4.5 meter dishes. Your neighbors may mind the bigger dishes and unlike the smaller dishes, they are not protected by law.)
Secondly, and this is becoming a much bigger issue - you share limited bandwidth with others. As it becomes more popular, it either gets much more expensive, or your download times may not be much better than 56k.
Lastly, the least expensive services still require you to use a phone line to send data to them. Depending on where you live, this can be non-trivial. True v-sat services go both ways, but are much more expensive in terms of start-up and monthly costs.
Like all of the other broadband solutions - don't beleive everything they tell you.
