I wonder if you could help me with some troubleshooting...here's the deal...Our computer was on, then it died...the on/off switch doesn't work, but I do get a short burst of power when I unplug/plug in the unit (about 7 seconds, enough time to open/close the cdrom and for the lights to come on) then it dies again.
I took the power supply box open and saw no sign of burning or anything like that...
I do not fear virus because 1. I throw away attachments and 2. No one has even checked e-mail from that computer for a week.
All I can think of is that the power supply box thingy is messed up & needs to be replaced, but I'd hate to buy a new one and still have no luck and need to replace the whole machine anyway.
Does this problem sound familiar to you??
PS, you're right...Hewlett Packard IS the FORD of computers :D
Thanks!

That to me does sound like a power supply problems. They're fairly inexpensive to replace unless you have to use an HP proprietary POS.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and look into that. If it doesn't work, I'll be out 20-40 bucks, but I'll be able to start my collection of spare parts ;)
On the other hand, my company is in cahoots with Gateway and can get me 10% off and a no interest loan...that's kind of hard to pass up, even if they have the stupid integrated motherboards. Maybe I'll get me a cow computer.
Thanks for your help, Chad...we appreciate it :)

Actually, they aren't all integrated sound/video cards...I'm starting to convince myself now...
...so tell me, will a DVD-ROM also work as a CD-ROM, or do you need to buy both? ...I guess I could ask a salesman these questions, huh?

The question you have to ask yourself!!!! Self - would the saleman tell you the truth. We've had that happen before and got the thing home and found out it wouldn't work.

...Ask away!:D Yes a DVD player can act as your cdrom also. Current top cd-rom speeds are like 52X(maybe more), but dvd-rom only work in the range of 20-30X. In my opinion that is fast enough. If you want a second cd drive, look into a CD-RW drive.

We went ahead and ordered the cow computer, now all I have to do is wait....
I got a Pentium4 1.3Ghz, 128 megs RAM (soon to be 192) 48x DVD, 32 meg video (coming out to make room for the Voodoo5), keyboard, mouse, etc. all for under $1000 and no interest, free shipping, and 1 year free AOL. I'm gonna be happy!! :)
It was a tough choice between the Pentium4 & the AMD, but I could not bring myself to purchase ANYTHING called a T-Bird
I'd have given you the business, Chad, but I feel we got a good deal with this plan.

Yeah, we'll definatly get to racin! I'd like to get a league going, but I'm afraid I don't have a good enough connection or the time to be the boss. I may join someone else's though...or just pick random races to run.
...and I know what you mean about AOL, I was on there for 1 or 2 years and they were terrible, but if I can save 200 bucks by getting the free service for a year, I can put up with a lot!! ;) After that one year, I'll just do that old switch-a-roo !
